Abstract

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into bionic eye technology has led to significant advancements in the field of visual prostheses. Bionic eyes have the potential to restore vision in individuals with various types of vision loss, such as retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration. However, traditional bionic eye technologies have limitations such as poor image quality and limited battery life. This review article examines the applications of AI in bionic eye designing and functioning. It begins with a brief history of bionic eye technology, followed by an overview of how bionic eyes work. The article then focuses on the applications of AI in bionic eye development, including AI-based image processing, machine learning algorithms, and neural networks. Advancements in bionic eye technology are discussed, such as the use of AI-based approaches to bionic eye design and functioning. The latest clinical trials and commercialization efforts are also reviewed. The types of bionic eyes, including retinal implants, optic nerve implants, and cortical implants, are discussed in detail, along with their advantages and disadvantages. The review concludes by examining future directions for bionic eye research and development. These include improving image quality, developing wireless communication technologies, miniaturizing implants, integrating AI, and developing multi-modal sensory prostheses. Overall, the integration of AI into bionic eye technology has the potential to revolutionize the field of visual prostheses. With continued research and development, these advancements may lead to the creation of devices that can fully restore vision to individuals with visual impairments, greatly improving their quality of life
