Abstract

Penetration of renewable energy into the distribution system affects the relay coordination to the extent that a mismatch in the coordination between primary and backup relays is observed. A complex characteristic of the distribution network introduces the coordination issues in the over current relay coordination problem.  Security in the distribution network is improved by means of introducing the better relay coordination algorithm. This paper solves the nonlinear problem of relay coordination by adopting hybrid meta heuristic method that improves the distribution network security by reducing the operation time. This paper hybridizes grey wolf optimization hybrid with cuckoo search algorithm (GWO-CSA) to minimize total operation time of relays on standard bus systems including 15 bus and 30 bus distribution system for testing the effectiveness of the algorithm. MATLAB based implementation on the distribution network using hybrid algorithm is found to be satisfactory. The effectiveness of the algorithm in reducing the operating time is observed from the hybrid algorithm.
